USD Scores Four in Eighth, Tops Metro State

USD scored four runs with two out in the eighth to break a 6-6 tie on the way to a 10-6 victory over Metro State Wednesday at Cunningham Stadium.

Rick Doane got things started with a single. His pinch-runner, Kevin Davis, later scored on a Kevin Herde double to give USD a 7-5 lead.

Herde finished with a double, a home run and three RBIs.

USD’s Tom Cheek took the mound in the seventh inning and struck out all six batters he faced as USD (13-14) won its sixth in eight games. Metro State (7-3) came in with a five-game winning streak.

U.S. International’s Mark Cisneros hit a two-run homer in the seventh, but it was one of the few bright spots for the Gulls in a 12-3 loss to host Fresno State. USIU fell to 9-19-1. Eric Schullstrom struck out 14 for 17th-ranked Fresno State (17-9).

WOMEN’S TENNIS

No. 3 Florida defeated San Diego State, 6-3, in a nonconference match at SDSU. The Aztecs’ Eva Olivarez defeated Andrea Berger, 5-7, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 2 singles. SDSU, ranked 17th, is 7-8.

Giovanna Carotenuto won at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles as USIU shut out Minnesota, 9-0.

In singles, Carotenuto, a freshman from Italy, defeated Jennie Moe, 6-3, 6-0. She then teamed with Diane Lowings to defeat Moe and Sofie Olsson, 6-4, 1-6, 7-6.

USIU improved to 12-7. Minnesota is 5-6.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Bonita Vista’s Torrel Purvis was one of two volleyball players who signed letters of intent to play at USD. Purvis, an All-Metro League selection at outside hitter the past two years and an all-section pick last fall, signed along with Nikki Wallace of Lancaster, a middle blocker.

SWIMMING

Mike Picotte, a senior at Mira Mesa High, won the 200 freestyle in 1:36.26 at the U.S. short course swimming championships in Nashville, Tenn. Picotte, who competes for Swim San Diego, also took 17th place in the 100 freestyle in 44.70.
