Cal State Bakersfield’s Rich Bailey, a Valhalla High graduate, won twice at 150 pounds to reach the quarterfinals of the NCAA Wrestling Championships at College Park, Md.

Bailey defeated North Carolina’s Dean Moskovic, 12-3, and P.C. Danteler of Northern Illinois, 18-4. Bailey will meet Iowa’s Doug Streicher in today’s quarterfinals.

Mark Gerardi, who also wrestled at Valhalla, split his two matches and then won a consolation match. North Dakota’s Tim Briggs (Granite Hills) lost his first-round match and then won a consolation-round match. Cal Poly San Luis Obispo’s Terry Watts (Poway) lost both his matches and was eliminated.

MEN’S SWIMMING

Kirk Stackle, who graduated from Mt. Carmel High School, swam the second leg for the Texas 400-meter medley relay team that set American, U.S. open and NCAA records at the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships at Indianapolis.

Texas won in 3:09.70, breaking the mark of 3:10.92 set by Stanford in 1985.

Stackle also placed sixth in the 200 individual medley at 1:47.31. USC’s Dan Jorgensen, who also swam at Mt. Carmel, finished third in the 500-meter freestyle with a time of 4:15.36.

MEN’S TENNIS

Wisconsin defeated San Diego State, 5-4, in the first round of the Irvine tournament. Wisconsin (11-3) entered ranked No. 1 in the Northeast Region. SDSU (12-5) will play UNLV today in the consolation round.

BASEBALL

Point Loma Nazarene College dropped to 1-5 in Golden State Athletic Conference play (11-10-1 overall) after allowing four runs in the second inning of a 5-3 loss at Christ College Irvine.
