COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Bad Hop Helps Cypress Edge Fullerton

Tom Ocuna’s bad-hop single in the eighth inning drove in two runs, giving Cypress College a 9-8 victory over Fullerton in an Orange Empire Conference baseball game Thursday at Cypress.

Fullerton had led, 8-6, to start the eighth, but Troy Babbitt opened with a double and eventually scored on a wild pitch.

Fullerton got a runner to second with one out in ninth, but Kevin Ehl got the final two outs. Ehl (2-1) pitched 1 2/3 innings to earn the victory for Cypress (14-11, 3-7 in conference play).

Jim Short had a two-run home run and an RBI single for Fullerton (16-5, 7-3). Short has nine home runs this season.

In other Orange Empire Conference baseball:

Riverside 3, Saddleback 0--Curt Callicot hit a two-run home run and Randy Curtis hit a solo homer to lead Riverside (19-6, 8-3). Jim Patterson (4-2) pitched a two-hitter, striking out seven and walking three. Saddleback’s Tony Wren was thrown out trying to score from first on Neil Carter’s fifth-inning double. Saddleback is 2-8, 8-11.

Golden West 4, Orange Coast 2--Jason Hutchins (3-1) pitched a complete game with 11 strikeouts in his first start of the season for host Golden West (16-5, 7-4). Robb Carabba had three hits and scored twice and Mark Magrann had two hits and two RBIs. Frank Herman extended his hitting streak to 13 consecutive games for the Rustlers. OCC is 9-14, 2-8.

In nonconference baseball:

Rancho Santiago 11, San Diego City 1--Rob Reimers went four for six with two doubles for Rancho Santiago (18-5) at San Diego. John Weber was two for four with two RBIs.

In Orange Empire Conference men’s tennis:

Saddleback 9, Rancho Santiago 0--Esteban Saba defeated Alex Venidis, 6-3, 6-1, in No. 1 singles for host Saddleback (15-0, 7-0).

Cypress 9, Fullerton 0--John Swaino defeated Casey Marshall, 6-0, 3-6, 6-1, at No. 1 singles for host Cypress (8-5, 5-2).

In Orange Empire Conference women’s tennis:

Cypress 6, Fullerton 3--Sabrina Burke of Cypress defeated Danielle Conkey in No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-2. Fullerton’s Holly Diaz beat Dorothy Takahaski, 7-5, 6-1. Cypress is 9-5 overall; Fullerton is 3-9, 1-7.
