SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Redondo High School baseball Coach Tim Ammentorp shuffled the deck Wednesday night against visiting North Torrance and dealt out a winning hand.

Four days ago, Redondo had been shut out by El Segundo. So Ammentorp shifted second baseman Chris Townsend--who had been batting in the second spot in the lineup--into the leadoff position to give the Seahawks some spark.

Townsend responded by reaching base all five times--on four singles and a walk--and spurred Redondo to an 11-3 Ocean League victory. Redondo improved to 8-4 overall and 3-0 in league.

“We’ve got a lot of interchangeable parts this year that we can use in different places in the lineup,” Ammentorp said. “We can send a kid to the plate in any of the nine spots who is a threat to hit the ball hard.

“Last year we were feast or famine. This year, no matter who is coming up, we have a chance to score some runs.”

Ammentorp also got some key production from his No. 9 hitter, catcher Larry Rodriguez, who singled, tripled, walked twice, scored twice, and drove in a pair of runs.

Redondo’s Frank Bignami (3-1), a sophomore right-hander, threw 140 pitches and worked six innings for the win. Bignami struck out a career-high 11, walked five, and gave up five hits before giving way to reliever Akash Sehgal for the seventh.

North starter Tony Torino (1-2) wasn’t as fortunate. Torino, who struck out eight and walked seven, was charged with all 11 Redondo runs, although only five of them were earned.

The Saxons (5-6, 1-2) committed seven errors, four of them by shortstop Jason Neal.

Redondo took advantage of North’s defensive lapses to score three runs in both the second and third innings, and four more in the sixth.

El Segundo 31, Verbum Dei 1--Tate Seefried batted five for seven, homered twice and drove in nine runs to power the Eagles to another runaway Camino Real League victory at Recreation Park in El Segundo. Seefried now has eight homers and 31 RBIs in 11 games.

Right-hander Rick Croxall pitched a one-hitter to improve to 4-1, as El Segundo upped its record to 10-1 overall and 4-0 in league play.
