HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Westlake’s 12th Victory Tops ’89 Total

Westlake High’s baseball team improved to 12-0 on Saturday with an 11-6 victory over Santa Clara in a nonleague game at Westlake.

Tim Falsken, who has made an oral commitment to attend Cal State Long Beach, had two hits and two runs batted in to lead Westlake. The Warriors, off to their best start, have surpassed last year’s total of 11 wins.

Westlake’s Frank Margolis hit a two-run home run in his first at-bat as a varsity player. Rob Neal, Mike Lieberthal and James Jones each had two hits and Todd Preston drove in two runs for Westlake.

Garth Teron was two for four to lead Santa Clara (4-2).

In other baseball games:

Millikan 9, Crespi 3--Mark Maurizi was two for three and drove in a run for host Crespi in the third round of the Palos Verdes-Redondo tournament.

Mike Peters was two for two and Scott Barton added a double and two runs batted in for Crespi (7-5-1).

Culver City 5, Notre Dame 4--Steve Colella was two for three with a run scored and Kevin Milligan drove in a run for Notre Dame (6-6-1) in the third round of the Palos Verdes-Redondo tournament.

Royal 8, Redondo 3--Dave Landaker was two for three with four RBIs and two runs for visiting Royal (8-4) in the third round of the Palos Verdes-Redondo tournament. Richard Naranjo added two hits, two RBIs and three runs for Royal.

Highland Hall 6, Virgin Valley (Nev.) 5--Highland Hall won the title game of the Cactus Classic in Mesquite, Nev., to earn the first baseball tournament championship in the school’s history. Tommy Tominaga led the way with four home runs in the tournament for Highland Hall (12-1).

Buena 9-11, Agoura 6-2--Buena scored an unearned run in the seventh inning to tie the score, 5-5, in the first game, then added four runs in the eighth en route to a sweep of a nonleague doubleheader at Agoura (2-7).

Rich Jacobelis was two for three and Danny Freedman added a solo home run, his second, to lead Agoura in the first game.

SOFTBALL

Fountain Valley 3, Simi Valley 2 (eight innings)--Kris Luskin hit a two-run home run to give Simi Valley a 2-0 lead in the top of the eighth inning, but Fountain Valley countered with three runs in the bottom half to post the win in the third-place game of the Canyon Tournament of Champions at Anaheim Hills.

Simi Valley sophomore right-hander Michele Castonguay (5-2), an all-tournament selection, allowed only four infield hits and struck out six.

First baseman Gina Skinner was Simi Valley’s other all-tournament selection.

La Reina 1-10, Santa Paula 5-1--Valerie Serpico hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning to help host La Reina (10-4) earn a split of a nonleague doubleheader.

Montclair Prep 12, Coastal Christian 0--All-tournament selection Shanna Hernandez threw a three-hitter to lead the Mounties (7-5) in the fifth-place game of the Mammoth Invitational at Bishop.

Hernandez (7-5) struck out 11 in 10 innings and was six for six in the tournament.
