COLLEGE BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Valley Takes Over Fourth Place With 9-1 Win

Valley College erupted for six runs in the seventh inning to overcome a 1-0 deficit and post a 9-1 victory over host Glendale in a Western State Conference baseball game Thursday.

The Monarchs (16-19-2, 10-9 in conference play) moved into sole possession of fourth place, one game ahead of Ventura, Santa Barbara and Bakersfield, all 9-10.

Ventura, which was tied with Valley entering Thursday’s action, fell to Cuesta, 9-3. Valley will conclude its conference season by playing host to Canyons on Saturday. The Cougars are tied with Moorpark and Cuesta for the conference lead at 14-5, four games ahead of Valley.

Against Glendale, Valley trailed, 1-0, entering the seventh inning, but Vladimir Pajcin doubled home Mark Cavarretta, who had singled, to tie the score. Jon Stevens singled in E. J. Pape with what proved to be the game-winning run. Valley had only five hits but took advantage of two errors and two walks.

Mitch Cizek (1-2), a freshman right-hander from Kennedy High, scattered six hits and struck out six. Kevin Thomas and Pajcin were each three for four. Thomas drove in two runs and Chad Ratliff added two hits.

Glendale is 6-14 in conference play.

In other games:

Santa Barbara 15, Pierce 6--Pat Huston was two for three, including his sixth home run, and Carl McFadden had two hits and drove in three runs to lead host Pierce (16-20, 7-12) in a Western State Conference game.

The loss ended Pierce’s three-game winning streak and eliminated the Brahmas from contention for a berth in the conference playoffs.

Cuesta 9, Ventura 3--David Eggert had two hits, including a home run, and John Sunia added a pair of hits to lead visiting Ventura in a Western State Conference game.

Cuesta improved to 22-13-2 overall.

Mission 7, Compton 6--Mike Rogers had two hits and drove in the winning run in the eighth inning for Mission (24-11-1, 14-6) in a Southern California Athletic Conference game.

Eddie Chavez and John Kukawski each had two hits for Mission. Kukawski singled to lead off the eighth, moved to third on consecutive sacrifice bunts, and scored on Rogers’ single.

Compton fell to 6-14 in conference play.

San Bernardino Valley 5, Antelope Valley 2--Mike Mueller doubled and hit a two-run home run to lead Antelope Valley (9-25, 4-13) in a Foothill Conference game.
