Phebus Wins, Bartelt Loses in Mission Viejo Tennis

Keri Phebus of Corona del Mar High School won her second-round match in the 18-and-under division, 6-0, 6-3, over Erica Kuttler of St. Petersburg, Fla., Thursday at the Seventeen magazine Tennis Tournament of Champions in Mission Viejo.
In the second round of 16s, Page Bartelt of Capistrano Valley High lost, 6-4, 6-4, to Valerie Poulos of Boston.
Phebus, a 15-year-old sophomore, won the 16-and-under title last year and has won the Southern Section singles championship the past two years. She is seeded eighth in the 18s.
Top-seeded Kimberly Shasby, who lost to Phebus in the 16s final last year, and fifth-seeded Kristine Kurth defaulted their first-round matches Wednesday.
Second-seeded Christine Neuman of Downers Grove, Ill., beat Jennifer Poulos of Boston, 6-1, 6-1.
The quarterfinal and semifinal rounds in all divisions will be played Friday at the Marguerite Recreation Center, with the finals on Saturday.
