HIGH SCHOOL TRACK ROUNDUP : Dameworth and Reyes Win Twice for Agoura

Agoura High, the defending Southern Section 1-A Division champion, won nine of 16 events to dominate the Frontier League track and field finals Friday at Nordhoff High.

Bryan Dameworth and Ryan Reyes each won two events for the league-champion Chargers in the nonscoring meet.

Dameworth took the 1,600-meter run in 4 minutes 30.7 seconds and the 3,200 in 9:15.8. Reyes won the 300 intermediate hurdles (41.8) and high jump (5 feet).

Agoura sprinter Kevin DePew timed 53.3 in winning the 400 and also ran a leg on the Chargers’ victorious 1,600-meter relay team (3:34.9).

Other Agoura winners included Omar Castillo in the 110 high hurdles (14.7), Matt Francisco in the long jump (20-10 1/2) and Mike Schick (2:06.9) in the 800.

Jayme Dinovitz of Calabasas improved his season best in the shotput by a foot, winning with an effort of 54-9. Ventura County pole vault champion David Copp of Nordhoff, who has cleared 13-8, needed only a 12-9 effort to win Friday.

The first three finishers in each event advance to the Southern Section 1-A Division preliminaries to be held May 12 at Arcadia High.

In other league finals:

Del Rey League--Alemany sophomore Terry Barnum won three individual events and ran a leg on the Indians’ victorious 400-meter relay team at Cal State Northridge.

Barnum took the 100 (10.6), 200 (22.2) and triple jump (41-8 1/2). He then anchored Alemany (43.7) to its second consecutive league title in the 400 relay.

Crespi’s Ryan Kieling won the 110 high hurdles in 14.6, then leaned ahead of Kevin Dal Ponte of Loyola to win the 300 intermediate hurdles. Both runners timed 39.0.

Mike Santiago of Alemany held off St. Francis’ Mike Torres in the final stretch to win the 400 in 50.4. Torres finished second in 50.6.

The top three finishers in each event advance to the Southern Section 2-A Division preliminaries, to be held May 11 at Gahr High in Cerritos.

GIRLS

Frontier League--Santa Clara freshman Taryn Tarver sister of basketball ace Shon Tarver, raced to victories in the 100 and 200 and also won the long jump at Nordhoff High.

Tarver timed 12.4 and 27.2 to capture the sprints, then leaped 17-0 1/4 in the long jump.

Agoura’s Deena Drossin, the defending 1-A champ in the 1,600 and 3,200, clocked 5:26.6 and 11:39.4 Friday in winning those events.
