COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Swaino, Charleton Win Tennis Titles

Cypress College’s John Swaino won the singles title, then teamed with Robert Charleton to take the doubles title in the Orange Empire Conference men’s tennis championships Saturday at Sunny Hills Racquet Club in Fullerton.

Swaino, the conference’s top-seeded singles player, defeated second-seeded Andy Stewart of Golden West, 6-2, 6-2. Swaino and Charleton, the third-seeded doubles team, beat top-seeded Carl Hinds and Stan Sanders of Saddleback, 7-6, 5-7, 6-4.

In the women’s competition at Cypress, Gina Garcia of OCC won the singles title and she and teammate Iliana Adame won the doubles. Garcia, the top-seeded player, defeated second-seeded Noelle Schmidt of Saddleback, 6-2, 6-1. Garcia and Adame defeated Schmidt and Lynne Dossey, 7-6, 7-2, 6-1, in doubles competition.

In Orange Empire Conference baseball:

Saddleback 12, Orange Coast 0--Corey Giuliano (8-5) pitched his first complete game and first shutout for visiting Saddleback (14-21, 7-17) in the regular-season finale. Giuliano allowed seven hits. Jason Thompson had two doubles, a home run and four RBIs. OCC ends its season 16-21 overall, 9-15 in conference.

Fullerton 14, Rancho Santiago 6--Fullerton (24-13, 32-9) scored six runs, four unearned, in the bottom of the first inning. Tom Kelly (8-3) got the victory and Matt Lackie (10-3) took the loss. Gary Mota hit his 10th home run and Tom Wilson his ninth for Fullerton, which defeated Rancho Santiago (32-9, 18-6) in three of four meetings.

Riverside 5, Cypress 3--Doug McConathy hit a solo home run in the eighth for host Cypress (23-19, 9-15). Riverside (27-15, 12-12) took a 5-0 lead over the first three innings, but Cypress pitcher Ken Kendrena followed with six shutout innings.
