Dave Hoffman, who will move to his third school in four seasons, has been hired to coach the Chaminade High basketball team, the school announced Thursday.

On a busy day at the West Hills campus, Chaminade also announced the hiring of Barbara Gomperz as the girls’ volleyball coach and Bernie Kyman as athletic director. Kyman and Hoffman replace Mike Lynn, whose resignation as basketball coach and athletic director takes effect at the end of the school year.

Hoffman, 34, served as Lynn’s assistant and junior-varsity coach for four seasons until he took the varsity job at St. Genevieve in 1987. After a 12-10 season with the Valiants, Hoffman moved to Calabasas and compiled a 22-24 record in two seasons.

At Chaminade, he led the junior varsity to three league titles in four years, including a 21-1 mark in his last season. He also left his mark with Lynn, who praised his protege.

“He’s potentially one of the best coaches in the Valley,” Lynn said. “I think he’ll take Chaminade a step higher.”

Hoffman, who owns a baseball card shop in Sherman Oaks, will join the staff as a walk-on coach. Chaminade, which was 14-11 this season and reached the Southern Section 2-AA Division semifinals, moves next season from the San Fernando Valley League to the newly formed Mission League that includes Alemany, Crespi and Notre Dame.

“That will be a great league with a lot of fan involvement because of the local teams,” Hoffman said.

Gomperz, 27, joined the Chaminade staff as a walk-on boys’ volleyball coach this year and led the Eagles to an 11-7 record and a second-place tie in the San Fernando Valley League.

Gomperz, who will coach both the girls’ and boys’ teams next year, led the Louisville girls to five consecutive San Fernando Valley League titles.
