NEWPORT BEACH : Tree Planting Today in Upper Bay Area

Share

The California Wildlife Campaign, in conjunction with the Tree Society of Orange County, will hold a public tree planting today from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Big Canyon and Back Bay Drive.

The California Wildlife Campaign, part of the California Department of Fish and Game, will supply the nearly 300 willow, sycamore and cottonwood saplings for planting. Families who assist with the planting can name the trees with a small stake and later help take care of them as a family project, according to John Scholl, a spokesman for the California Wildlife Campaign.

The trees were chosen as examples of species naturally found in the Upper Newport Bay area, Scholl said.

Lunch will be provided by the local El Ranchito restaurant, which has also promised to donate $5 to the California Wildlife Campaign for every tree planted. The money will go toward purchasing open-space areas in California.

For more information, contact the California Wildlife Campaign at (714) 640-6746. Volunteers for the tree planting should bring shovels and gloves.
