BASEBALL AMATEUR DRAFT : Angels Make Pitcher Their First Selection

Six players from USC and players from several other local colleges have been selected in the first 10 rounds of the baseball draft that began Monday and concludes today.

Major league baseball released only the names of first-round selections Monday, but it has been learned that the Angels, who did not have a first-round choice because of the free-agent signing of Mark Langston, took 6-foot-5 right-hander Phil Leftwich of Radford (Va.) University in the second round with the 64th choice overall. Leftwich was 6-6 with a 3.35 earned-run average this season.

USC infielder Bret Boone was selected by the Seattle Mariners in the fifth round and Trojan outfielder John Jackson was chosen by the San Francisco Giants in the sixth round.

The Angels also took USC pitcher Randy Powers in the seventh round and Trojan catcher Danny Gil in the eighth round.

The Mariners took USC left-hander John Cummings in the eighth round and Trojan second baseman Damon Buford was taken by the Baltimore Orioles in the 10th round.

Pepperdine shortstop Chris Martin was a second-round pick of the Montreal Expos and outfielder Jalal Leach was a seventh-round selection of the New York Yankees.

Stanford pitcher Mike Mussina was a No. 1 pick of the Baltimore Orioles, the 20th choice overall, and pitcher Stan Spencer was taken by the Expos with the 35th choice as compensation for the loss of Hubie Brooks, who signed as a free agent with the Dodgers.

The Miami Marlins, an independent Class-A team in the Florida State League that is allowed to take part in the draft beginning in the fourth round, selected Stanford outfielder Paul Carey with their first pick. The Marlins took Loyola catcher Miah Bradbury in the fifth round and UC Irvine pitcher Ken Whitworth in the 10th round.
