SPORTSCOPE : Niki Bracken of Cal Poly Pomona Athlete of Year

Cal Poly Pomona forward Niki Bracken, who helped the Broncos to a third-place finish at the NCAA Division II women’s basketball tournament, has been named the 1989-90 California Collegiate Athletic Assn. female athlete of the year.

The 6-foot-2 Bracken also was named CCAA player of the year and was selected to the Kodak Division II All-America team for the second season in a row. She has made the Division II All-Final Four team three times, the first women’s basketball player in the division to accomplish the feat.

In her final season with the Broncos, Bracken averaged a team-leading 18.6 points and 9.4 rebounds. She finished with a school-record 2,246 points and became only the third player in Division II to finish with more than 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds. She also holds school records for most points in a season (619) and most points in a game (44).

Bracken became the first Bronco to win CCAA athlete of the year honors since basketball and track standout Debra Larsen in 1986. Guard Wade Green of Cal State Bakersfield, who led the Roadrunners to second place in men’s basketball, was selected CCAA male athlete of the year.

The Cal Poly Pomona women’s basketball team has signed Remitha Houston of Washington High to a national letter of intent.

Houston, a 5-6 guard, was selected 4-A Division co-player of the year and made the All-Southern League team for the third consecutive season. She also was chosen as most valuable player of the City-CIF All-Star game.

As a senior, Houston averaged 20.1 points and scored 30 or more points in seven games. Washington was ranked as high as No. 13 in the nation by USA Today and won its second consecutive 4-A championship.

Houston, who ranks second in school history with 1,338 points in her career, is the third player Pomona has signed. The others are Nicole Sanders, a 5-5 guard from Lynwood, and Andrea Haynes, a 6-0 forward from Fremont.

Three teams from the San Gabriel Valley have been honored in the fifth annual CIF Southern Section Academic Awards Program.

Pasadena Poly was the winner in baseball and football and Rosemead won in badminton. The awards go to teams with the highest cumulative grade-point averages in 21 sports during the 1989-90 athletic year.

Rosemead posted a 3.69 grade-point average in badminton and Pasadena Poly was at 3.56 in baseball and 3.35 in football.

The teams will be honored during a ceremony before the Angels-Kansas City Royals game Tuesday at Anaheim Stadium.

The South El Monte-based Los Angeles Junior Lakers basketball club has been invited to send an all-star team of Latino high school players from the Southland to compete in the Sun, Surf and Slam Tournament June 24-July 2 in Honolulu.

The team will include San Gabriel Valley players Anthony Calvillo of La Puente and Rich Soto of Nogales. Calvillo was the sixth-leading boys scorer in the state.
