Roger Lee Weigand, a bank executive who served as a volunteer coach for youth sport teams, has died in Sherman Oaks. He was 45.

Weigand was an executive vice president with Sears Savings Bank for 13 years and recently worked one year at Glendale Federal Bank. His hobby was helping children to excel in sports.

He died Saturday of a rare blood disease, said his wife, Rio Weigand.

Born May 9, 1945, in Naperville, Ill., Weigand moved to North Hollywood with his parents at age 2. He received a bachelor’s degree in economics from Cal State Northridge, a law degree from the San Fernando Valley College of Law and held a real estate broker’s license.

His motto was: “If you stop learning, you stop growing,” according to his wife.

During the past two years, he coached children’s basketball at North Hollywood Park and softball for a Sherman Oaks Little League team named the Indians. He was den leader of Cub Scout Pack 84, Den 3, in North Hollywood. In addition, he had been a member of the Young Republican National Federation since the mid-1980s and helped raise money for the Olympic Games in 1984 and 1988.

From 1971 to 1974, he served in the Marine Corps in Vietnam, attaining the rank of captain.

He is survived by his wife of 14 years; a son, Eric Weigand of North Hollywood; a daughter, Autumn Weigand of North Hollywood; mother, Dorothy Weigand of North Hollywood, and sisters, Pat Morris of Vista, Calif., and Florence Blanchard of Bellvue, Ida.

A private memorial service was held Monday. Donations can be sent in Weigand’s name to Emmanuel Lutheran Church in North Hollywood. Contributions will be given to an organization called Penny Pines that plants trees in forests, his wife said. Arrangements were handled by Pierce Brothers Valhalla Mortuary in North Hollywood.
