The Ventura College football program has added a new coach and two nonconference opponents and has upgraded its playing facility for the 1990 season.
Former Rio Mesa High defensive coordinator Paul Petrich has been named an assistant coach to first-year Coach Dick James. Petrich coached at Rio Mesa from 1977-87 and was an assistant at Santa Barbara City College last season.
Ventura added perennial powers Bakersfield and El Camino to its schedule. In the final poll of the California Community College Football Coaches Assn., Bakersfield was ranked seventh in the state and El Camino was ranked fourth in Southern California. Ventura will play host to El Camino on Sept. 8 and Bakersfield on Oct. 6.
Also, Larrabee Stadium at Ventura High--the Pirates’ home field--has been renovated by the Ventura School District and Ventura County Community College District. The natural-grass playing surface was upgraded and a sprinkler system was installed.
