SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Showing up was good enough for several South Bay high school teams Saturday in the opening day of competition at the 23rd annual Los Angeles Summer Games, which are being held at El Camino College and 21 other sites throughout Southern California.

The Rolling Hills softball team, which wasn’t officially entered in the L.A. Games field until Saturday morning, advanced all the way to next weekend’s semifinals thanks to two forfeit victories. In the 64-team boys soccer field, North Torrance also used two forfeits to advance to a third-round game (tomorrow at 1 p.m. at South Torrance High).

Some teams did have to work for victories, including Westchester in the 48-team passing league football competition. The Comets, after getting a bye in the first round, defeated Van Nuys, 20-6, in a second-round game at North Torrance High. Senior quarterback Brad Freeman threw for three touchdowns.

The Redondo Union baseball team beat Garfield, 6-2. In boys basketball, two South Bay teams won: Banning beat San Pedro, 53-52, and Westchester defeated Monroe, 65-33.

Other victorious teams in the 128-team boys’ basketball field included Carson (forfeit), Chadwick (forfeit), Hawthorne (62-25 over Glenn), Morningside (57-40 over Canoga Park), Rolling Hills (forfeit), St. Bernard (58-35 over Mayfair), South Torrance (forfeit) and Torrance (70-41 over La Mirada).
