CS Northridge Signs 4 Men Track Athletes for Weight Events

Looking for reinforcements in the men’s weight events, Cal State Northridge has signed four track and field athletes to letters of intent.

Gil Carrillo of Moorpark and Ryan Vierra of Modesto are junior college signees, and Matt Jordan of Dana Hills and Chad Danowsky of Simi Valley signed from the high school ranks.

Carrillo, a 1988 graduate of Simi Valley High, placed fifth in the state junior college championships in the javelin and decathlon in May. He has personal bests of 214 feet 3 inches in the javelin and 6,359 points in the decathlon.

Vierra has bests of 174-0 in the hammer, 172-0 in the discus and 52-0 in the shotput.

Jordan placed seventh in the shotput in the state high school championships last month and has a best of 57-6 with the 12-pound shot.

Danowsky had a high-school best of 180-2 in the discus but placed only fourth in the Southern Section 4-A Division Championships.

Northridge also signed Kristi Dunn of Mission Viejo High and Jennifer Andreas of Apple Valley.

Dunn, who has personal bests of 41-6 in the shotput and 130-0 in the discus, placed second in the shotput and fifth in the discus in the Southern Section 4-A meet.

Andreas has a personal best of 4 minutes 48.6 seconds in the 1,500 meters.

The Van Nuys-Sherman Oaks Babe Ruth baseball team will play in the Capital Classic Invitational in Carson City, Nev., July 7-12. Teams from seven states will participate.

Van Nuys-Sherman Oaks, coached by Scott Drootin, includes pitchers Andrew Lorraine of Hart, Mike Eby of Westlake, Sean Henson of Monroe, John Najar of San Fernando, Kevin Foderaro of Hart and Roland De La Maza of College of the Canyons. Other members include Lance Migita of Hart, Keyaan Cook of Montclair Prep and Tim Falsken of Westlake.

Five Cal Lutheran football games will be broadcast this fall by KADY-TV, an Oxnard-based station available from San Luis Obispo to Calabasas.

Telecasts will open with a pregame show featuring Cal Lutheran Coach Joe Harper. The first televised game will be Sept. 15 when Cal Lutheran plays host to UC Santa Barbara.

K.C. Alfred, 17, and Ryan Cox, 19, of Westlake Village won a silver medal in the U.S. Youth Sailing championships held June 22-29 in Gulf Port, Miss.

Cox, the skipper, and Alfred, the crew, piloted their Laser II sailboat to second place in the 40-team race. Alfred also received the sportsmanship award.

Kip Landis and Kevin O’Neill, pitchers for the Woodland Hills Astros of the Collegiate Baseball League, have signed professional contracts.

Landis, who pitched at Pepperdine last year, signed with the Minnesota Twins, and O’Neill, who pitched at Cal Lutheran, signed with the San Diego Padres.

A summer field hockey camp in Camarillo has been scheduled for boys and girls aged 9 to 14. The camp will be held July 23-27 at Monte Vista School, 333 North Lantana Street in Camarillo.

Jayson Merrill, Moorpark College sophomore quarterback, will attend Western State College in Gunnison, Colo., on a full scholarship, Moorpark Coach Jim Bittner said.

Merrill (6-foot, 170 pounds), from Newbury Park, was a second-team all-state selection.

Sean Cheevers, Moorpark’s sophomore kicker, will walk on at Cal State Long Beach, Bittner said. Cheevers, from Thousand Oaks High, led the nation in kick scoring.

The final session of the Crespi Baseball Camp will be held next week from Monday to Friday at Crespi High.

The sessions run from 9 a.m. to noon each day.
