Construction Begins on San Pedro Baseball Fields

Grading has begun on a 15-acre site near the corner of Gaffey Street and Westmont Drive in San Pedro for the proposed San Pedro Baseball Inc. complex. When completed in September, 1991, the complex will include five baseball fields and be home to the Eastview Little League. About half the $1.5 million needed to build it has been raised, a project spokesman said. Information: (213) 514-5542.

The Torrance United Waves, a South Bay soccer team for girls 14 and younger, was crowned national champions of the U. S. Youth Soccer Assn. after winning the annual Pikes Peak Invitational. Playing on the Air Force Academy fields in Colorado Springs on June 28 to July 1, the Waves won all six of their matches against teams from Colorado, Kansas, Texas and Florida, outscoring opponents by a total of 23-1. The team consisted of Danielle Aranda, Miriam Parsa, Jamie Perdue, Jenni Swagler, Kim Bauer, Kristi Tynan, Traci Arkenberg, Shannon Boxx, Stephanie Milam, Nicole Traina, Sasha Danna, Rachel Mosley, Kathryn O’Connel, Tricia Tanaka and Celeste Adams. The Waves were coached by Sam Tanaka.

The Los Angeles Heat plays host to former Palos Verdes football and soccer star Dominic Militello and his team, the Salt Lake Sting, in an American Professional Soccer League West match tonight at West Torrance High. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. Salt Lake won its first meeting in overtime, 3-2, in Utah on June 9. The Heat, coming off a 4-2 loss to the San Francisco Blackhawks, is tied with New Mexico for third place in the APSL West’s Southern Division. The Sting is in fourth place in the Northern Division. The top three teams in each division qualify for playoffs that begin Aug. 17.
