NOTEBOOK : Wisenberg, Egan to Face Dutch Junior Team

Mike Wisenberg and Kevin Egan, who played baseball last season at Glendale College, are among 18 players who will travel to the Netherlands on Aug. 5 for a 10-day tour that will include seven games against the Dutch junior national team.

The U. S. team, coached by Mitch Miller of the West Coast Baseball School in Agoura, will conduct clinics and play its games in Harlem, Amsterdam and Rotterdam.

Wisenberg is a catcher and third baseman. Egan plays outfield.

Last summer, Miller took a team to Paris for two weeks to play a series against the French national team.

“It’s an educational experience for these kids to see what it’s like in another country,” Miller said. “They’ll have free time to go on tours and see things, but we’re also going to be working on their skills to prepare them for their seasons next year.”

Glasnost softball: Twenty-two softball players from the La Canada area will represent the United States when they travel to the Soviet Union and Sweden on Aug. 9 for a playing tour.

The team, consisting of players selected from La Canada, Sacred Heart, Flintridge Prep and Polytechnic high schools, will be coached by Pat Gillan and Shawn Evans of La Canada High.

The Glendale Mickey Mantle baseball team, which tied Norwalk for the state co-championship, is in Salt Lake City this week for the regional championships.

The eight-team tournament includes defending national champion Norwalk, three teams from Utah and representatives from Washington, Nevada and Arizona.

Glendale played Nevada Wednesday night in a first-round game. Results were not available at press time.

Try again: Rob Myers, a punter who played at La Canada High and Washington State, was cut Monday by the Cincinnati Bengals.

Myers averaged 44.7 yards a punt last season at Washington State, second in the Pacific 10 Conference behind UCLA’s Kirk Maggio (45.2 yards).

Walk-on: Paul Traughber of La Canada High is hoping an impressive performance in a football all-star game two weeks ago will propel him into a position at Arizona State.

Traughber, a 6-foot-3, 225-pound fullback, gained 900 yards and scored 12 touchdowns last season for La Canada High and was named to The Times’ All-Glendale team as a linebacker. He will attempt to make the Sun Devils as a walk-on.

Traughber was named most valuable player of the West team at the Hall of Fame All-Star game July 20 after gaining 100 yards in 20 carries.

On track: Former Crescenta Valley High and Glendale College track standout Donna Mayhew placed fourth in the javelin in the Goodwill Games in Seattle last week with a throw of 192 feet 4 inches.

Mayhew’s personal best of 208-10 in winning the 1988 U. S. Olympic Trials ranks third on this country’s all-time list.

“I know it’s there, but I’m just missing right now,” Mayhew said. “The power is all there, but I’m a little off.”

Natalya Shikolenko of the Soviet Union won the Goodwill Games competition at 202-2.

Mayhew, a Glendale resident, was the state junior college champion at Glendale in 1980 and went on to place third in the 1983 NCAA championships her senior season at Arizona State.
