Vaughn Rushes San Diego Over North

Terry Vaughn averaged over eight yards per carry last season for Oceanside High School. He was the county’s leading rusher, amassing over 1,400 yards for the Pirates.

So you just knew that when he had a vision about doing something great in Saturday’s Southern California College Prep Football Game, the opposing defense was in trouble.

It was. Boy, was it ever.

Saturday night at Mira Mesa High School, Vaughn had even better numbers than he did during the regular season. Although he averaged 166.2 yards per game for the Pirates, he had 156 by halftime against a hand-picked team of just-graduated seniors trying to end a three-game losing streak against San Diego.

Calling it one of the most satisfying football games of his prep career, Vaughn rushed nine times for 165 yards and two touchdowns to lead San Diego to a 28-19 victory in front of 4,000 partisan fans. He also had a 62-yard punt return. And he could have had more offense had he been given the ball more often.

“I dreamed about this,” Vaughn said. “I swear to God, I had a vision.”

Ramona’s Mel Galli, who coached the offense for the San Diego stars, said beforehand that the key to his team’s fortunes was on the offensive line.

“Offensively, our strength is probably our offensive line because we’re so much bigger than them; we’re also pretty strong at quarterback and running back,” Galli had said. “We just can’t turn the ball over too many times because, offensively, I think we can pound them.”

And there was plenty of pounding. For the fourth straight year, San Diego beat the team from the north. And even more impressive about this year’s victory is that the draw area was expanded to include Southern Section teams that are in the LA city limits.

It still didn’t help.

Vaughn, who is headed for Arizona, had plenty of support.

--Point Loma quarterback Danny White--bound for Penn State--completed 11 of 18 passes for 140 yards.

--The defense recorded six quarterback sacks and had one fumble recovery and an interception.

--And the starters on the offensive line--Chula Vista’s Louie Zumstein, Oceanside’s Sale Isaia, Orange Glen’s Troy Martz, Vista’s Brooks Chapman and San Pasqual’s Lee Johnston--opened holes and provided plenty of protection for San Diego quarterbacks.

San Diego added to a 21-13 halftime lead with a 32-yard run by Keith Price.

Vaughn made the most of his opportunities in the first half, carrying seven times for 156 yards.

Vaughn made his presence felt early, but so did the San Diego defense. By the time Vaughn had totalled three carries, he had out gained the entire Los Angeles team by 150 yards. Los Angeles rushers had minus-21 yards on their four carries to Vaughn’s 129.
