SIDELINES : Swiss Pair Take Cycling Race
The Swiss pair of Pascal Richard and Thomas Wegmuller bottled up and defeated Italy’s Claudio Chiappucci in the Tre Valli Varesine cycling race, a warm-up for the Sept. 2 world championships in Japan.
The Swiss duo alternated in launching attacks against Chiappucci in the final kilometer and Richard outsprinted the Italian to the finish line in Wednesday’s race.
Wegmuller finished third in the same time as the winner.
Richard, a 1988 world cycle-cross champion, completed the 209-kilometer race in 5 hours, 20 minutes and 17 seconds.
