A Los Angeles Police Department motorcyle officer used the Heimlich maneuver Thursday to save a 1-year-old boy who was choking on a French fry in South Los Angeles, police said.
When Leland Jones Sr. noticed that his son, Leland Jr., was having trouble breathing, he called to three motorcycle officers at Manchester Boulevard and Main Sreet.
Officer Johnny Meneses, noting that the baby’s lips were blue, turned the child upside down and back again, performed the Heimlich maneuver and then cardiopulmonary resuscitation, until the toddler coughed up a small piece of potato.
The boy was taken to Martin Luther King Jr./Drew Medical Center, where he was reported in good condition.
