Behrends Honored in Tennis

UC San Diego’s Christine Behrends was one of 23 players named to the Rolex Collegiate Tennis All-Star team Tuesday.
Fountain Valley’s Debbie Graham of Stanford and Steve Bryan of Texas were named Tennis Magazine-Volvo Tennis college players of the year by the Intercollegiate Tennis Coaches Assn.
Behrends was one of six players who made the team in women’s singles.
The 62nd San Diego area district championships, involving more than 500 players and 48 divisions, begin Friday at the Vista Tennis Club.
The divisions will be broken down by age group and talent level. There will also be open divisions for men and women in doubles and singles. The tournament runs Friday to Sunday and Sept. 1 to Sept. 3.
HOCKEY
Former Phoenix Roadrunner Jimmy McGeough has signed with the San Diego Gulls of the International Hockey League.
The Gulls now have six players signed, with training camp to begin Sept. 18.
McGeough, a right wing who also plays center, scored 35 goals in 77 games with Phoenix last year. He has played in Austria and with the Pittsburgh Penguin organization and is known as one of the fastest skaters in the IHL.
General Manager Don Waddell said he expects 30 players in camp, and 22 will make the team.
SPORTS MEDICINE
Sharp Rehabilitation Services will sponsor the seventh Rehab Sportsfest, a day of sports and competition for the disabled, Friday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at 7901 Frost St.
The afternoon will begin with celebrity wheelchair relays including former Charger Kellen Winslow. There then will be a one-mile event, plus games such as bingo, chess, horseshoes, table tennis and wheelchair races for people with brain and spinal chord injuries, cerebral palsy, stroke or other conditions. There will be seven ability divisions.
Each entrant will receive a T-shirt and certificate of achievement. To participate or volunteer, call 541-3048.
