SOUTHLAND ROUNDUP : Sonoma State Steals Victory, 42-10

Sonoma State intercepted five passes and returned three of them for touchdowns as the Cossacks defeated UC Santa Barbara, 42-10, Saturday at Goleta.

Mike Williams intercepted three passes, returning one 53 yards for a touchdown.

Williams also recovered a fumble as the Gauchos (0-1) committed eight turnovers.

Rick Epperson and Carlos Hernandez also returned interceptions for touchdowns.

Glen Campbell gained 116 yards in 16 carries for the Cossacks (1-1) and scored on a 38-yard touchdown run.

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 48, West Texas State 13--Junior quarterback David Lafferty completed 16 of 32 passes for 342 yards and four touchdowns as the Mustangs opened their season with a victory at Canyon, Tex.

San Luis Obispo took a 14-7 lead then scored on five consecutive possessions in the second quarter to forge a 42-7 advantage by halftime.

Mustang receiver Ted Robison caught two touchdown passes and also threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Eric Hansen on a flea-flicker play.

Running back Brian Lucas, a freshman from Corona del Mar, gained 66 yards in 14 carries.

West Texas State fell to 0-2.

Azusa Pacific 41, Cal Lutheran 13--Quarterback Brian Hunt passed for 314 yards at Azusa, and the Cougars defeated the Kingsmen for only the third time in 17 games.

Azusa Pacific (1-0) held the Kingsmen (0-1) to 97 yards and two first downs in Joe Harper’s first game as coach of Cal Lutheran.

Redlands 30, Colorado College 3--Fullback Curt Landreth and running back Shawn Trejo each rushed for more than 100 yards to lead the Bulldogs in the season opener for both teams at Redlands.

The Bulldogs built a 21-3 lead by halftime as Landreth gained 93 of his 107 yards and scored a touchdown.

Trejo gained 101 yards in eight carries.

Redlands quarterback Brian Harmon completed seven of 13 passes for 110 yards and a touchdown.

Cal State Northridge 24, Eastern New Mexico 13--Northridge quarterback Coley Kyman came off the bench and completed eight of 21 passes for 73 yards and a touchdown to lead the Matadors (1-1) at Northridge.

Albert Fann, Northridge’s All-American running back, gained 72 yards in 17 carries before leaving the game in the second half with a pulled hamstring.

Victor DeVaughn played in Fann’s place, finishing with 59 yards in 14 carries.
