With 164 yards and two touchdowns, Royal High's Jeff Creed got a lot of mileage out of his three receptions Friday night. He averaged 54.7 yards a catch and scored on plays of 77 and 71 yards in a 31-3 win over Santa Paula.
As it turned out, however, Creed did not even have the best numbers for a player named Jeff.
Enter Jeff Gibbons, and very swiftly at that. The Oak Park receiver amassed 166 yards and three touchdowns on three catches for an average of 55.3 yards a grab. Gibbons scored on receptions of 71, 70 and 25 yards.
There were two other scoring catches of at least 70 yards--by Palmdale's Brian Porter (79 yards) and Saugus' David Doyle (70).
Passing: On the other end of Porter's and Doyle's catches were passers making their only throws of the night. Running back Anthony Ortega hit Porter on an option play in the first quarter of Palmdale's 38-13 loss to Muir, and reserve quarterback Rich Gutierrez connected with Doyle in the second half of Saugus' 28-0 blowout of South Pasadena. . . . Saugus starter Jeff Hickman connected on 10 of 13 passes for 157 yards. . . . The only numbers better than Hickman's were those of Royal junior Ryan Fien: 13 of 15 for 231 yards, a 17.8-yard average.
Rushing: Wide receiver Pat Escamilla of St. Francis made the most of two carries on reverse plays, dashing for touchdowns of 26 and 61 yards. . . . Three running backs chalked up more than 190 yards--Channel Islands' Renard Carn (197), Glendale's Pathon Rucker (191) and Quartz Hill's Erik Thomas (191).
Quartz Hill gained 390 yards on the ground in its 39-12 win over South Bakersfield; the Rebels allowed just 19 rushing yards.
Defense: Chaminade (1-0-1) has 12 sacks--six in each of its first two games. Lineman Brent Martin leads the Eagles with five sacks. The strong pressure has resulted in good pass defense. Opposing passers have completed just 14 of 33 tries for 185 yards, and safety Travis Hall has two interceptions.
