SAN DIEGO — They had heard about this Cal State Long Beach team but, what with the season opener against Oregon last week and next week’s trip to Western Athletic Conference rival Brigham Young, San Diego State didn’t exactly know everything it would have liked to have known about the 49ers.
Coach Al Luginbill was so frustrated with the Aztecs’ performance last Saturday against Oregon that he laid out the game plan for Long Beach early last week. San Diego State would be concerned with itself: Carrying out assignments, limiting penalties, keeping its house in order.
Well, one thing the Aztecs knew about Long Beach was that two teams had developed rushing attacks against the 49ers that kept calculators ticking into the evening. Normally, San Diego State’s game plan consists of warming up quarterback Dan McGwire’s arm and sending him out to play. But Luginbill has said he wants to incorporate a solid running game into the Aztec offense and Long Beach was in town. . . .
So the Aztecs ran. Then they passed. And they ended up with 514 yards of total offense and a 38-20 victory.
It was their first victory of the season against one loss and Long Beach’s third loss in as many games.
San Diego State showed it still needs some discipline. The Aztecs were called for 79 yards in 11 penalties, giving them 172 yards in 21 penalties in two weeks.
Penalties were an early problem, but, once solved--at least temporarily--San Diego State scored three times on four possessions. The first, McGwire’s 32-yard touchdown pass to Dennis Arey, capped a nine-play, 79-yard drive. Seven of the plays were rushes.
Junior T.C. Wright, a transfer from Mesa (Ariz.) Community College, ran for 122 yards and two touchdowns in 20 carries. Junior Curtis Butts carried nine times for 91 yards and two touchdowns, one of which came from a yard out and the other from 71 yards to give San Diego State a 21-0 lead.
Field goals by Long Beach’s Sean Cheevers covering 32 and 45 yards cut that to 21-6 and Oliver Thompson’s 64-yard interception return made it 21-13.
A McGwire-to-Arey pass play of 61 yards set up Wright’s six-yard touchdown run and restored order for San Diego State, making it 28-13. McGwire completed 13 of 24 passes for 235 yards and a touchdown.
