SATURDAY’S HEROES

Following are last week’s top collegiate football performances by former South Bay high school and community college players: Brian Treggs, California, junior: The former Carson High wide receiver had 12 catches, one short of the school single-game record, for 130 yards and one touchdown in a 52-24 loss to Miami. The record of 13 catches was set by Jack Sharaub against Illinois in 1964.

David Blakes, San Jose State, junior: The former Bishop Montgomery and El Camino College wide receiver had four catches for 31 yards in a 28-14 victory over Pacific. He is tied for second on the team with 11 receptions in two games.

Howard McCowan, USC, freshman: The former Carson defensive back had four unassisted tackles and one pass breakup in a 19-14 victory over Penn State.

Johnnie Morton, USC, freshman: The former South Torrance wide receiver had three catches for 35 yards, including a 25-yard reception in the second quarter to help set up a field goal that put the Trojans ahead for good, 10-7.

Arnold Ale, UCLA, sophomore: The former Carson linebacker had two tackles and a sack in a 32-31 victory over Stanford.

Greg Thomas, Colorado, junior: The former Rolling Hills defensive back had four unassisted tackles, one assist and one pass breakup in a 23-22 loss to Illinois.

Treamelle Taylor, Nevada-Reno, senior: The former Hawthorne and El Camino wide receiver had six catches for 81 yards in a 41-7 victory over Sacramento State.
