Carbajal Stops Calzada in Non-Title Fight
Michael Carbajal, the International Boxing Federation light-flyweight champion, pounded Oscar Calzada from the opening bell and stopped him at 2:09 of the third round of their non-title fight scheduled for 10 rounds Thursday night at Las Vegas.
Carbajal, from Phoenix, fighting for the first time since winning the title in July, improved to 16-0, 10 by knockout.
Carbajal, 109 pounds, is scheduled to fight another non-title fight Oct. 25 and then defend his championship in December.
Calzada, 107, of El Paso, fell to 12-2.
In a companion bout, Johnny Tapia of Albuquerque, N.M., defended his U.S. Boxing Assn. super flyweight championship by winning a 12-round unanimous decision over Luigi Camputaro of Hartford, Conn.
