COLLEGE FOOTBALL REPORT / WEEKDAY UPDATE : USC : Wellman Doing Just Fine This Season

Share

Flanker Gary Wellman, who caught 23 passes for 427 yards and six touchdowns last season, has already caught 16 passes for 230 yards and a touchdown in two games this season.

“Wellman is playing as well as any receiver that I’ve ever seen in this league,” said Washington Coach Don James, whose team will try to contain Wellman Saturday in Seattle. “He’s made some marvelous catches. He’s just an incredible guy.”

Cornerback Mike Salmon is the younger brother of Tim Salmon, an Angel farmhand who, despite missing about 3 1/2 months last season with a broken jaw suffered when he was hit by a pitch, is considered one of the top outfield prospects in the team’s minor league system.

Mike Salmon was a reserve outfielder for the Trojans last spring, appearing in five games without getting a hit but scoring three runs, driving in a run and stealing two bases in two attempts. A three-sport star at Greenway High in Phoenix, Salmon was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies after his senior year.

He is not sure which sport he prefers. “I enjoy playing football more,” Salmon said, “but my heart kind of belongs in baseball.”
