Coronado 2, San Diego 0--The lone score, a safety, came in the third quarter. On a fourth-and-2 from from the its own 30, San Diego (2-2) decided to go for a fake punt. The ball was snapped to the up-man, who tried lateraling but instead threw it away. The ball was eventually batted out of the end zone.

Coronado (2-2) drove inside the 10 twice, once in the first quarter and again in the fourth, but each time sacks and penalties pushed the Islanders back.

There were seven turnovers in the game. Carlos Rivera had two interceptions for San Diego, and the Cavers also recovered three fumbles. Coronado had one interception and one fumble recovery.

Coronado’s Marco Palumbo carried 13 times for 71 yards.

Mira Mesa 21, University City 3--Mira Mesa (4-0) had two running backs who gained more than 100 yards and a quarterback who completed 100% of his passes.

Wayne Pittman carried 16 times for 134 yards and a touchdown, and Robbie Edwards ran for 110 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries.

Quarterback Mike Bovee was seven for seven passing for 75 yards.

Mira Mesa’s defense sacked the University City quarterback six times, Jomo Graham with three sacks and Pittman with 2 1/2. University City fell to 1-3.

Kearny 35, Serra 15--In one game, Darnay Scott neared his total receiving yardage for his first three games with 141 yards and three touchdowns on four catches.

Quarterback Sam Page was nine of 15 for 189 yards and the touchdowns.

Scott, who entered the game as the county’s leading receiver with 179 yards on 10 catches, also had his fourth interception, returning it 70 yards for his second defensive touchdown.

Running back James Curtis rushed nine times for 100 yards for sixth-ranked Kearny (4-1), which held Serra (0-4) to minus 7 yards on one completed pass in 10 attempts.

Patrick Henry 33, Madison 0--Luke Lowrey completed 10 of 16 passes for 198 yards and one touchdown for Patrick Henry (3-1), which recorded its second shutout. Lowrey also ran one yard for a touchdown in the first quarter. Nate Nelson rushed 143 yards on 18 carries and one touchdown. Madison is 2-2.

Coaching moves

Poway has named Gloria Wheeler as gymnastics coach. Wheeler lettered in gymnastics at North Dakota State in 1976-78.

Tom Schwartz, who has coached the boys’ junior varsity soccer team since 1985, will now coach the girls’ varsity.

At Rancho Bernardo, David Meyer has been named wrestling coach. Meyer had been at El Camino.
