Division III Crown Goes to La Jolla

La Jolla High School’s cross country team won the state Division III title Saturday at the Stanford Invitational at Palo Alto’s Stanford Country Club.

La Jolla scored 36 points to defeat second-place Corona del Mar (74) and Los Gatos (143).

Mailee Ferguson was second in the 5,000-meter race with a time of 19 minutes, 3 seconds. She had plenty of help from teammates Lauren Andrade (eighth, 19:58), Stephanie Bache (ninth, 19:59), Elizabeth Cornejo (12th, 20:10) and Julie Schoene (13th, 20:12).

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Former San Diego State player Laurel Brassey-Kessel, who competed on the Aztecs’ 1981 Final Four team, coached 11th-ranked New Mexico to a 15-6, 15-9, 9-15, 16-14 Western Athletic Conference victory in Albuquerque. It’s the first time New Mexico (11-3) has beaten SDSU (11-7). Angela Martin had 27 kills and Gracie Schutt had 21 for SDSU, which led 13-11 in the fourth game.

Top-ranked UC San Diego defeated No. 6 La Verne, 15-4, 15-12, 15-2, in a nonconference Division III battle. Vikki Van Duyne had 12 kills for the Tritons (21-6). La Verne is 9-7.

Host Christian Heritage defeated Cal Tech, 15-5, 15-4, 8-15, 15-6 in a nonconference match. The Hawks (3-0) had 14 kills from Kim Masoli. Cal Tech is 2-6.

U.S. International lost two of its first three matches at the Reno Invitational. USIU (6-14) defeated host Reno, 6-15, 15-11, 15-8, 8-15, 15-12, behind the 17 kills of Stephanie Milbradt, but lost to Texas-El Paso, 4-15, 17-15, 15-12, 15-1 and Cal State Northridge, 15-10, 15-9, 15-3. Heather Kelley had 17 kills.

Point Loma Nazarene defeated the NAIA’s 15th-ranked team, Azusa Pacific, 15-4, 15-7, 8-15, 15-12, in a Golden State Athletic Conference match at PLNC. Debbie Simpson had 16 kills for Point Loma and Roberta Simpson added 11. Setter LeAnne Lopez had 51 assists. PLNC is 16-5, 6-0, Azusa Pacific 19-9, 4-2.

University of San Diego defeated Santa Clara, 15-12, 13-15, 8-15, 15-8, 15-12, in a West Coast Conference match. Angie Rais and Nikki Wallace had 18 kills apiece for the Toreras (9-10, 1-2).

MEN’S SOCCER

Cal State Northridge defeated host USIU, 5-2. James Tipper scored USIU’s first goal off the first of John Molomo’s two assists. Mark Troutt also scored. USIU is 3-6-1.

Westmont College (7-4, 2-0), fourth in the NAIA, scored three goals in the final five minutes for a 6-0 victory over PLNC (4-1, 2-1).

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Unbeaten Santa Clara scored a 3-0 victory over USIU (4-6-1) in a nonconference match. Santa Clara (12-0) is ranked No. 1 in Division I.

SDSU fell to 4-4-1 after its 2-1 loss to Oregon State in a nonconference match. Shelly Latham scored SDSU’s only goal with three minutes left in the game.

GOLF

With 18 holes remaining, SDSU is 12th in the 72-hole New Mexico Classic in Las Cruces. UC Santa Barbara and Stanford are co-leaders with two-round scores of 585. SDSU is at 608. USIU is in 17th at 621, and USD is 18th at 642.
