SOUTHLAND ROUNDUP : Curtius Passes for 5 Scores in UC Santa Barbara Win

Mike Curtius threw for 339 yards and five touchdowns Saturday, leading UC Santa Barbara to a 37-19 triumph over Hayward State in a nonconference college football contest.

The victory ran Santa Barbara’s record to 3-2 while Hayward State dropped its fifth straight game and is 1-5.

Curtius, who completed 33 of 45 passes, hit wide receiver Johnny Ace with a pair of touchdown tosses of 21 and 13 yards, respectively, in the first half.

He also threw scoring strikes to Matt Perry, Rob Dade and Brian Fleming.

Santa Barbara kicker James Russell set a school record with a 50-yard field goal in the game.

In other games, John Eck gained 77 yards in 12 carries as the University of San Diego (4-1) beat Pomona-Pitzer (3-1) at Pomona, 21-17. . . . Schon Branum rushed for 143 yards in 20 carries as Claremont beat La Verne, 24-7, in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at Claremont. Claremont is 1-3 and 1-1 in the SCIAC. La Verne is 0-4, 0-3.

John Spear threw for 249 yards and three touchdowns and ran for another score lifting Sonoma State to a 45-25 victory over St. Mary’s in a nonconference game in Moraga.

The win improved Sonoma State to 3-2 while St. Mary’s dropped to 4-2.

Spear, who completed 12 of 21 attempts, connected with Henry Milton on scoring tosses of 45 and 80 yards and 52 yards to DeAngelo Mitchell as the Cossacks built a 31-10 halftime lead.
