Occidental 22, Trinity 10--Mark Collinsworth’s second field goal, a 35-yarder with 12 minutes 7 seconds left, broke a 10-10 tie, lifting host Occidental to a nonconference win.
Trinity (0-5) had tied the game on Tarpon Wiseman’s 32-yard third-quarter field goal. Wiseman had a chance to tie the game with 8:16 left, but missed a 43-yarder.
Occidental scored a safety when Robert Patterson tackled quarterback Mike Hinton in the end zone with 2:50 remaining. Quarterback Derrick Williams added an insurance score on a 45-yard run with 34 seconds left.
Occidental (3-2) took a 10-7 second-quarter lead on a 95-yard pass play from Williams to Charles Jordan, who fumbled on his 40-yard line, recovered the ball at the 47 and outsprinted two defenders into the end zone.
