Carson’s Walsh Hobbles Banning : Colts: Despite ankle injury, he breaks school record with 407 passing yards in 41-14 victory.

After not being expected to play because of an ankle injury, Carson quarterback John Walsh passed for four first-half touchdowns to lead the Colts past Wilmington Banning, 41-14, Friday night before a crowd of about 8,000 at Veterans Stadium in Long Beach.

Walsh, who was injured in Carson’s 56-0 victory over Gardena a week ago, completed 18 of 28 passes for 407 yards, breaking his school yardage record, to lead Carson to its sixth consecutive triumph over its neighborhood rival.

In its last three victories over Banning, Carson has outscored the Pilots by a combined score of 137-21. Carson leads the series, 21-16.

Behind Walsh, who completed nine consecutive passes during one stretch, Carson took a 33-7 halftime lead.

On three consecutive plays in the first quarter, Walsh connected on touchdown passes of 10, 46 and 16 yards respectively to Abdul Muhammad, Latario Rachal and Donnell Adams.

Rachal led Carson with six catches for 114 yards, Adams had four for 49, Muhammad four for 87 and Theron Hill three for 60.

Carson was moving through the air with ease in the first half, Banning quarterback Anthony Nicholson completed only one pass in five attempts for minus-five yards and threw two interceptions to Tarriel Hopper.

The lone bright spot for Banning was tailback Travis Davis, who rushed for 158 yards in 25 carries with 166 yards gained in the first half.

Davis set up the Pilots’ first score by gaining 53 yards during a 62-yard second-quarter drive that was capped by Nicholson’s one-yard run, cutting Carson’s lead to 26-7.

Carson finished the scoring late in the first half on an 83-yard touchdown play from Walsh to Fred Sims. In the half, Walsh finished with 11 completions in 13 attempts for 265 yards and four touchdowns.

Banning added a fourth-quarter touchdown on a 23-yard run by Ken McKinley to make the score 33-14.

Carson scored again midway through the fourth quarter on a two-yard run by Muhammad, his third touchdown.

Carson is 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the Pacific League. Banning is 2-3 and 1-1.
