COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Rabbitt Leads Way for UCI Women

Buffy Rabbitt won the women’s individual competition to lead UC Irvine to a first-place finish Saturday in the Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Cross-Country Invitational.

Rabbitt finished the 5,000-meter course with a time of 16 minutes 27 seconds.

UC Irvine’s men finished fifth with the club team Gardena Runners taking first. Mike Nielson (25:12) was the top finisher for the Anteaters, finishing 21st on the five-mile course. Danny Gonzales (24:18) of the club team Reebok Aggies was first.

At the Cal State Fullerton women’s volleyball tournament:

William & Mary 3, Cal State Fullerton 0--William & Mary won the tournament by posting a record of 2-1, including a 17-15, 15-11, 16-14 victory over Fullerton. Nicole Bibbins had 19 kills for William & Mary (13-3). Becky Howlett had 30 kills and Rachel Wittliff had 10 for the Titans (4-20) in that match.

William & Mary also defeated Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Friday to win the first-place tie-breaker. Cal Poly also had a 2-1 record in the tournament. Cal Poly was second, Fullerton was third with a 1-2 record and U.S. International was fourth at 1-2.

Cal Poly also beat Fullerton Saturday, 15-13, 18-16, 15-6. Howlett had 20 kills against Cal Poly.

In other Saturday games, Cal Poly defeated International, 12-15, 11-15, 15-13, 15-10, 15-9 and International defeated William & Mary, 15-6, 8-15, 12-15, 15-12, 15-11.

Howlett was named the tournament’s most valuable player.

In Golden State Athletic Conference women’s volleyball:

Cal Baptist 3, Southern California College 1--Krista Hoover had 17 kills for Southern California College (15-16, 1-6), which lost, 15-8, 15-7, 10-15, 15-6.

In nonconference men’s soccer:

Christ College Irvine 2, Pacific Christian College 1--Phil Nemath scored 23 minutes into the first half to tie the score, 1-1, and Rodney Nelson scored the winner four minutes into the second half for Christ College Irvine (3-9).

Southern California College’s Sherri Hall won the women’s individual title in the Golden State Athletic Conference cross-country championships at Bonelli Park in San Dimas.

Westmont won the women’s team title and Southern California College finished fourth. Hall had a time of 18 minutes 16 seconds on the five-kilometer course. Amber Coley (19:29) finished eighth for Southern California College.

In the men’s division, Point Loma Nazarene, led by first-place finisher Sean O’Hara, who ran the eight-kilometer course in 25:41, won the team title. Tim Bryan of Southern California College (28:02) finished 21st. SCC and Christ College Irvine did not field full teams for the men’s competition.

At the Intercollegiate Tennis Coaches Assn. Southern California Women’s Tennis Championships at UC Irvine, Arizona’s Danielle Scott, a former Corona del Mar High School standout, advanced to the singles title match today against Tonya Fuller of the University of San Diego.
