COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Chapman’s Zuercher Loses in Division II Tennis Final

Mike Zuercher, a junior at Chapman College, lost in the final of the National Division II men’s tennis championships Saturday in Corpus Christi, Tex.

Zuercher lost to Mark Segesta of UC Davis, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.

In men’s nonconference soccer:

Christ College Irvine 0, Christian Heritage 0--Christ College Irvine (3-10-1) appeared to have scored in the 42nd minute but it was ruled that the throw-in was illegal.

In Golden State Athletic Conference women’s volleyball:

Fresno Pacific 3, Christ College Irvine 0--Stacy Kirch had six kills for Christ College Irvine (11-21, 1-10), which lost at home, 15-1, 15-9, 15-11.

In nonconference women’s volleyball:

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 3, UC Irvine 0--Sonja Van Winden had 12 kills to lead Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (12-15) to a 15-5, 15-11, 15-8, victory at UC Irvine. Irvine (6-13) was led by Kim Collins, who had nine kills and 11 digs.

UC Irvine’s Dan Galindo finished ninth in the men’s division and Irvine’s Roberta Moronez finished eighth in the women’s division at the Cal Poly Pomona cross-country invitational in San Dimas.

Galindo finished the eight-kilometer course in 24 minutes 54.9 seconds and Moronez finished the women’s 5K in 17:23.

Andrea Sansom (17:41) finished 11th, Jade Preato (17:55) finished 15th and Akemi Royer (18:04) was 18th for Irvine.

Clay Biddle (25:00) finished 11th, Bill Branigan (25:02.4) finished 13th, Kevin Harris (25:05) finished 14th and Todd Coulston ((25:22) finished 17th for Irvine.

Wes Ashford (23:47) of the Long Beach Track Club was first for the men and Chris Morgan of Nike set a course record with a time of 16:42.3.

Southern California College’s Sherri Hall won the women’s division race in 18:41 on a five-kilometer course at the Southern California College cross-country invitational at the Back Bay Course in Newport Beach. Teammate Amber Coley (19:46) was second and SCC won with 27 points to edge The Master’s College, which had 28.

The Master’s College, the only school to field a complete team in the men’s division, was led by Andy Yaeger, who won the eight-kilometer race in 28:29. Tim Bryan (29:48) and Troy Bailey (29:59) finished second and third for SCC. Mark Powell (30:00) of Christ College Irvine was fourth.
