Kehrli Out Rest of Season

Corona del Mar High School quarterback Todd Kehrli will probably miss the rest of the football season after injuring himself at a cookout Saturday.

Kehrli, a 6-foot-4, 215-pound junior, cut the little finger on his throwing hand to the bone while tending to a piece of steak on a barbecue Saturday. Kehrli’s hand was operated on Saturday night to repair a partially severed nerve.

“The first thing I asked the lady when I got to the hospital (was) will I be able to play Friday night?” Kehrli said. “She didn’t say anything, so I figured it was pretty bad.”

It will be in a cast two to three weeks, which means Kehrli will miss the final three games of the regular season. Coach Dave Holland said it is possible but not likely that Kehrli could return if the Sea Kings qualify for the playoffs.

The injury is especially frustrating for Kehrli, who as a sophomore helped Corona del Mar to the Southern Section Division VI title last season. He had struggled somewhat this season, completing 43% of his passes for 827 yards for the Sea Kings (4-2-1, 1-0-1 in the Sea View League).

“The whole offense was starting to pick up--starting to make big plays,” Kehrli said.

Kehrli will be replaced by Chad Woolsey, a senior cornerback and backup quarterback who hasn’t thrown a pass in a game all season.
