Santa Margarita High School stayed unbeaten with a 21-0 victory over Brawley in a nonleague game at Saddleback College that was stopped with 1:02 left in the first half because fog had reduced visibility to about 10 feet. Officials and coaches waited 20 minutes to see if the fog would lift, but when it didn’t, the game was called. “It is an official win for Santa Margarita,” Santa Margarita Coach Jim Hartigan.

Capistrano Valley wide receiver Dave Poltl broke the school record for career receptions. Poltl, a senior, had seven catches for 126 yards, giving him 138 career receptions, one more than Todd Beightol (1984-85).

ODDS AND ENDS

The final score was 21-14 in favor of Brea-Olinda, but it felt like 21-0 to the members of the Wildcats’ defense. They held the losers to 57 yards total yards, but Magnolia didn’t have to go far for its touchdowns, taking over deep in Brea territory after poor snaps from center sailed over punter Jamie Baraglia’s head. Ariel Courvetier scored Magnolia’s touchdowns from four yards and one yard out.

Jack Nichols, La Habra football coach, spent most of the week assuring boosters, students and opposing coaches that last week’s 54-0 loss to Buena Park was the correct score in local newspapers.

“I know if I had read the score and hadn’t been at the game, I would have thought it was wrong,” Nichols said. “Believe me, it wasn’t. We gave up more points last week than we did in six previous games.”

La Habra also lost running back Jason Johnson against Buena Park with bruised ribs. Johnson, the county’s second-leading rusher with 978 yards, sat out Friday night’s loss to Sunny Hills.
