University of San Diego (14-2-5, 1-2-1) got a score from Paul Gelvezon in regulation and one from Vince Bianchi in overtime for a 2-2 West Coast Conference tie with visiting St. Mary’s College (9-8-3, 2-1-1). Toby Taitano, Lee Ronces and Philip Burton each had assists for USD.

Curtis McAlister recorded his eighth shutout and host San Diego State beat Santa Clara, 1-0, in a nonconference match. SDSU’s Brian Craft-Negrete scored in the 61st minute off an assist from Jeff Wale. SDSU is 11-6-2. Santa Clara, ranked No. 1 in the nation earlier in the year, is 11-3-3.

BIATHLON

Brent Steiner of Tempe, Ariz., won his fifth race in the 1990 Coors Light Biathlon Series, covering the San Diego course in 1 hour 7 minutes 42 seconds. The lower times were due to a shorter bike course than the standard 30 kilometers. This was the final race before the series championship Nov. 11 in Phoenix. Joel Thompson of Encinitas was third in 1:09.44 and Oceanside’s John Groulx was fourth in 1:09.59.

Sally Grand of Plymouth, N.H., won the women’s race in 1:18:05. Leucadia’s Colleen Gallagher finished sixth in 1:22.55 and Del Mar’s Nancy Thomas was ninth in 1:24.41.

BOAT RACING

Anaheim’s Gordon Jennings, Jr. scored 800 points in his superstocks flat-bottom runabout to win the 16th Gordon Jennings Memorial Regatta off Mission Bay. Jennings defeated Mike Anderson by 200 points. Among the other winners was San Diego’s Jon Church, who won the formula cobra/inboard hydroplane race, defeating El Cajon’s Scott Del Nero and Kevin Aylesworth.
