Empire League--Katella’s Martha Pinto, the four-time Orange County champion, beat Los Alamitos’ Traci Fatone by more than a minute (17:51 to 18:55) to win the girls’ title at Carbon Canyon Park in Brea.

Los Alamitos placed five runners in the top 10 to win the team title, outscoring Katella, 22-64. Cypress was third at 87.

In the boys’ race, Katella sophomore Mike Love won in 15:27, but Esperanza--led by John Kenfield’s second-place finish in 15:31--won the team title in an upset. Esperanza entered the league final in second place, but won the championship by outscoring Katella, 36-40. Los Alamitos was third at 58.

Olympic League--Whittier Christian’s Shawn Ericson won the boys’ race in 14:48, and Orange Lutheran’s Amber Parkinson won the girls’ as their schools won the team titles at Prado Park in Chino.

It was Whittier Christian’s fifth consecutive league championship and its eighth in the past 11 years.

Ericson, undefeated in league competition, was followed by teammates Jeff Rutter (fourth, 15:36) and Darren Wren (fifth, 15:40).

Parkinson, also undefeated in league meets, outran Ayala’s Erin Neel by 45 seconds. Whittier Christian’s girls, led by 10th-place Courtney Crofoot, placed second.
