HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Poway, Mt. Carmel Advance in Girls’ Volleyball Tourney

The top two seeds advanced to the Division I quarterfinals of the San Diego Section Girls’ Volleyball Tournament Tuesday, as No. 1 Poway and No. 2 Mt. Carmel each won in three games.

Shirley Aboyme had 16 kills as Mt. Carmel (12-8) defeated Chula Vista (5-11), 15-0, 15-13, 15-13. Poway defeated Morse, 15-0, 15-6, 15-5, as freshman Kara Milling had six kills. Robin Miller had four blocks and four kills and Heather Burke three aces for the Titans.

In San Diego Section girls’ tennis:

Torrey Pines 18, San Dieguito 0--Second-seeded Torrey Pines (21-0) moved one step closer to a championship rematch with Poway in the Section 3-A Girls’ Tennis Team Tournament by defeating San Dieguito (13-9) in the quarterfinals. Sophomores Erin Bohrnstedt and Alison McNellis, and senior Krista Kuechler each won all but one game in their three singles sets. The Falcons will face fourth-seeded Mira Mesa (15-2), a 13-5 winner over Monte Vista, in today’s semifinals.

Poway 15, Morse 13--No. 2-Poway (15-5), which defeated Torrey Pines, 10-8, in the 1989 final, also advanced to a semifinal match today against third-seeded Bonita Vista (17-1), which defeated Patrick Henry, 16-2. Morse finished 8-8.

La Jolla 14, LJCD 4--Top-seeded La Jolla (19-1) advanced to the semifinals of the 2-A tournament by eliminating La Jolla Country Day (14-6). La Jolla, led by Lynn Coakley at No. 1, sophomore Renee Gold and LeeAnn Rostovsky, who did not lose a game, swept the singles matches.

San Pasqual 9, Coronado 9 (San Pasqual 80-72, games)--No. 2-San Pasqual (19-1) survived a scare from Coronado (14-6), earning the victory by winning more games. San Pasqual singles player Christi Blount overcame a 2-1 deficit to win the final set, 6-2. San Pasqual will face USDHS (13-3), a 15-3 winner over Grossmont, and La Jolla plays crosstown rival Bishop’s (15-5), an 11-7 winner over Valhalla, in today’s semifinals.
