Eric Fox lived up to his name, leading Capistrano Valley to a 17-0 victory over El Dorado in a CIF Central Conference football quarterfinal.

Fox ran for 100 yards in 10 carries, giving him 1,000 yards rushing for the second consecutive season. He also scored both offensive and defensive touchdowns.

The defensive touchdown might have the key play of the game.

El Dorado was driving in the first quarter, and Golden Hawk quarterback Craig Jennings completed a short pass on second down to receiver Tom Hayes at the Capistrano Valley 35.

Jennings tried the same play on third down. But Fox jumped in front of Hayes and took the interception 69 yards for a 7-0 Capistrano Valley lead.

Fox also scored on a 32-yard run in the fourth quarter; an eight-yard scoring run was nullified by a penalty.

A miss was a big hit with Edison in its Big Five Conference football quarterfinal against Servite.

With about three minutes left, highly regarded Servite kicker Pat Blottiaux’s 54-yard field goal attempt fell five yards short. Edison ran out the clock and advanced to the semifinals with a 14-13 victory.

Mike Angelovic completed 20 of 28 passes for 249 yards for Edison, and Tim Rosenkranz completed 19 of 33 for 207 yards and two touchdowns for Servite. But there was a star who didn’t make the box score: Edison nose guard Jim Collins.

Servite had driven to Edison’s 30 with four minutes left when Collins broke through to sack Rosenkranz for a seven-yard loss.

The play was pivotal, moving Servite out of field-goal range.

Blottiaux had kicked field goals of 52, 48 and 47 yards the previous week but had a tough time with the playing surface at Cerritos College, which had been dampened by an afternoon rain. He also missed earlier attempts, from 53 and 43 yards, wide left.

“I knew they would get a shot, but with wet ground and a soccer-style kicker, I wasn’t sure they would make it,” Edison Coach Bill Workman said. “Wet ground is death for a soccer-style kicker.”

He Got It Done: In overtime, Danny Maestas scored on a four-yard run and intercepted a pass as El Toro defeated South Coast League rival Mission Viejo in the Southern Section Division III semifinals. Tied at 21, the game was decided by the “California Tiebreaker,” in which each team is given four chances to score from the opponent’s 10. El Toro lost the coin toss and had first possession, and Maestas scored on the second play. He then intercepted a pass by Mission Viejo’s Tim Snowden to clinch the 28-21 victory.

Stylish Victory: In the other Division III semifinal, Capistrano Valley was upset by Paramount, 26-25, when Jack Manu threw for a touchdown and a two-point conversion in overtime. Capistrano Valley, Orange County’s top-ranked team, had scored first in overtime on Tony Solliday’s 10-yard pass to Dan Zamora. “There was no question we were going for two,” Paramount Coach Ken Sutch said. “That’s our style.”

Orange Rush: Brian Remmel rushed for 282 yards in 25 carries, including 220 yards in the first half, and scored on touchdown runs of 78 and 94 yards to lead Orange past Agoura, 35-22, in a Division IX semifinal.

Eight Isn’t Enough: Administrators at La Quinta offered their students free bus transportation to La Mirada for the Aztecs’ Division VI semifinal but rescinded the offer when only eight students signed up. The lack of school spirit didn’t seem to hurt: La Quinta won, 20-7.
