Casals’ Team Advances in Championships

The top eight seeded players easily advanced Wednesday into the third round of the women’s 40 singles division at the National Hardcourt Tennis Championships at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club.

In the senior mixed doubles division, former touring pro Rosie Casals of Sausalito and her partner Gordon Smith of Mill Valley advanced with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Charlie and Hilary Marold of Glen Ellyn, Ill.

Joe McDonough and Kerry Safdie, the top two seeds, advanced with straight-set victories in the San Diego All-College Tournament at the University of San Diego.

BOWLING

Jess Stayrook of San Diego rolled a 300 game and took the lead after four rounds of the PBA Touring Players Championship in Detroit.

Stayrook, whose lone victory came last year at Seattle, had 5,814 pins, 11 short of the 24-game record set in 1970 by PBA Hall of Famer Earl Anthony.

Steve Cook of Roseville, Calif., was in second place, 172 pins back.
