ROUNDUP : Agoura’s Drossin Prevails in Kinney West Regional in Record-Tying Time

Deena Drossin of Agoura High tied the six-year-old Woodward Park course record in winning the Kinney West regional cross-country title Saturday in Fresno.

The Charger senior clocked 17 minutes 7.8 seconds over the 5,000-meter (3.1-mile) circuit, equaling the mark set by Marnie Mason of Klamath Falls High (Ore.) in 1984.

The top eight finishers in the boys’ and girls’ races qualified for the national championships, to be held in San Diego on Saturday.

Two of Drossin’s Marmonte League rivals finished among the top eight.

Jeannie Rothman of Westlake timed 17:16 in finishing second and Channel Islands’ junior Veronica Barajas was eighth in 17:47.

Canyon senior Dave Hartman placed third in 15:04 behind winner Louie Quintana (14:49) of Arroyo Grande and James Menon (15:01) of San Luis Obispo.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Cal State Northridge 59, Northeastern 58--Julie Arlotto scored on a layup with four seconds left after an inbounds pass from Bridgette Ealy at half court to give CSUN the consolation championship of the Fresno State tournament.

Ealy, who did not play in the first half because of a strained calf muscle, scored 12 points on six-of-seven shooting and had three rebounds and two assists in 18 minutes. Arlotto finished with eight points and had six assists.

Northridge (2-3), which had fallen behind by five before mounting its second-half comeback, shot a sizzling 62% from the field.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Thousand Oaks tournament: Sophomore midfielder Ian Leiviska scored five goals in 3-1 and 2-1 wins over Santa Paula and Bosco Tech in the first round of pool play for Burbank (3-0).

Harvard 1, Notre Dame 0--Jerome Schwartz scored on assists from Dwight Angelini and Scott Malin to give the Saracens (1-0-1) a nonleague victory at home.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Agoura 6, Canyon 0--Jill Gallegos scored two goals in the first day of pool play in the Simi Valley tournament. Agoura (3-0) received a forfeit win from Crescenta Valley earlier in the day.

South Torrance tournament: Strikers Jen Evans and Amanda Love each scored two goals to lead Royal (2-0) to shutout victories over Miraleste and Redondo at South Torrance High.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Crespi 84, San Luis Obispo 78--Rasaan Hall had 28 points, 16 rebounds and three steals and John Curtin added 20 points to lead Crespi (2-1) over San Luis Obispo (1-2) in the third-place game of the San Luis Obispo tournament.

La Canada 63, Camarillo 54--Richard Mandeville scored 20 points and tournament most valuable player Jeff Lord added 12 as the Spartans held off the Scorpions to win the Saugus Shootout at Saugus High.

Saugus 77, San Fernando 55--Greg Yumbar had 27 points and 11 rebounds for Saugus in the consolation final of the Saugus Shootout. Teammate Jason Riggio had seven steals and six assists. Garrick Simpson scored 17 for San Fernando.

Palmdale 41, Antelope Valley 33--Jason Grimes scored 10 points to lead Palmdale (1-2) and Raynell Dunbar paced Antelope Valley (0-3) with 12 in the seventh-place game of the Saugus Shootout.
