PREP SOCCER ROUNDUP : Cerritos Slows Mission Viejo, Wins at Brea

Share

Mission Viejo’s three-game winning streak was ended by Cerritos, 2-1, Saturday night in the championship game of the Brea-Olinda boys’ soccer tournament.

The Diablos (4-2) had put together an impressive string of performances over the past 10 days, knocking off three teams ranked higher than they were at the time--No. 1 Santa Ana, No. 3 Orange and No. 4 Katella. That had moved from from eighth to third in the Orange County poll.

But against Cerritos (7-3), the Diablos struggled despite scoring first and forcing Cerritos goalie George Lopez to make twice as many saves as their goalie, John Cooke.

Mission Viejo’s Doug Roberson scored on a free kick in the ninth minute of the second half for a 1-0 lead. It was a difficult 25-yard kick from the right side, past a three-man wall and into the left corner of the net.

Left wing Eddie Lewis accounted for both Cerritos goals--one in the 17th minute of the second half to tie the score, 1-1, and the game-winner 12 minutes later off a corner kick.

Lewis was named the tournament MVP.

“We played well enough to win,” Mission Viejo Coach Cal Foster said. “We just couldn’t get the ball in the net like we have been (doing).”
