BOYS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Sunny Hills Gets Past Gahr, 70-68, on Overby’s Late Layup

Kenny Overby drove for a layup with 13 seconds left to give Sunny Hills High School a 70-68 victory over host Gahr in a nonleague boys’ basketball game Thursday.

Gahr (7-3) set up for the last shot but missed and Sunny Hills (5-4) rebounded. All five starters scored in double figures for Sunny Hills: Brett Mitchelson had 17, David Ragsdale 15, Terry Mann 14, Overby 13 and Dominic Carnesi 11.

In other nonleague games:

Century 70, Troy 48--Darvin Thompson and Damien Hamler scored six points each in the first quarter as host Century (5-2) jumped out to a 20-6 lead. Thompson, who added 10 in the fourth quarter, had a game-high 22 points.

Hamler had 14 and Chris Lopez 16, including six of six free throws. Century was 18 for 22 from the free-throw line.

St. Margaret’s 74, Bethel Christian 47--Ryan Westendorf scored 32 points and had 17 rebounds and Aaron Wright had 17 points and 17 rebounds to lead host St. Margaret’s (5-3). St. Margaret’s raced to a 21-5 first-quarter lead by limiting Bethel Christian (4-4) to one field goal in the quarter.

Arroyo 65, Foothill 59--Sean Amos scored 18 points for Foothill (2-6), which lost at Arroyo. Jared Winger scored 14 and Nick Konopisis had 10 for Foothill.

Brea-Olinda 68, El Dorado 53--Doug Yeo had 19 points and 11 rebounds for visiting Brea-Olinda (2-6). Gilbert Arriola scored 11 points and added seven rebounds and Jeff Roeser scored 10 for Brea-Olinda.

In the Hesperia tournament:

Silver Valley 71, Liberty Christian 39--Liberty Christian fell behind, 22-4, in the first quarter and pulled all of its starters (3-6). Justin Flagg scored 12 for Liberty Christian (3-6).

In the Bosco Tech Tournament:

El Modena 70, Eagle Rock 65--Bob Baytosh scored 16 points and Aaron Aguilera scored 14 and had 12 rebounds to lead El Modena to a quarterfinal victory.

In the La Sierra Academy Tournament:

Calvary Chapel 65, Hemet Baptist 61--Junior forward John O’Brien scored 27 points and added 17 rebounds for Calvary Chapel in the consolation championship game. O’Brien, a junior forward, averaged 21.8 points and 14 rebounds in four games and was voted to the all-tournament team.
