BOYS’ ROUNDUP : Venegas Scores 40 Points as University Wins

Luis Venegas scored 40 points to lead University High School to a 87-67 victory over San Luis Obispo in a consolation semifinal of the Mt. View St. Francis tournament Friday in Mountain View.

Venegas, a junior guard, connected on seven of 11 three-point attempts and was 13 of 20 from the field. He also made seven of 11 foul shots.

Junior forward Donnell Dowdy scored 19 points for University (4-7).

In the Fayetteville Tournament:

New York Rice 83, El Toro 81 (OT)--Jerry McCullough scored 38 points, including a three-pointer at the buzzer to send the game into overtime tied, 76-76.

Rice (8-2) took a quick lead in overtime and El Toro’s Rob Johnson, who scored 32 points, had to rush an errant shot at the buzzer.

Jeremy Hogue scored 18 points and had 10 rebounds and Dave Canfield had 10 points for El Toro.

In the Canyon Tournament:

Burroughs 68, Bolsa Grande 60--Jeff Wood had 21 points and Desi Carter had 19 points, including five three-point shots, for Burroughs (4-6) in a consolation game. Sy Sayarath had 15 and Robert Fierro had 14 for Bolsa Grande (2-6).

Canyon 86, Arizona Mt. View 55--Canyon outscored Mt. View, 30-12, in the second quarter to take a 48-16 halftime lead and win easily. Kevin Wilborn scored 10 of his 23 points in the second quarter and Tony Walker scored eight of his nine in that quarter.

In the Ribet Academy Tournament:

Brethren Christian 54, St. Genevieve 39--Brethren Christian held St. Genevieve to three points in the fourth quarter. Chiron Hart scored 18 points and Aaron Nielson 12 for Brethren Christian in a consolation semifinal.

In the Chino Tournament:

Savanna 83, Escondido 37--Jeremy Lyche scored 21 points and Andy Trumpour 20 to lead Savanna (6-6) in one semifinal-round game. The Rebels outscored Escondido, 31-10, in the second quarter to take a 55-22 halftime lead.

In the Torrance Tournament:

Rancho Alamitos 77, West Torrance 70--Ulysses Trammel scored 13 points in the third quarter to lead Rancho Alamitos on a 27-17 run in the third-place game. West Torrance led, 34-30, at the half, and Rancho Alamitos led, 57-51, going into the fourth quarter. Trammel finished with a team-high 19 points, Marshall Brown added 12 for Rancho Alamitos (3-4).

In the Atascadero Tournament:

San Clemente 59, Bakersfield Foothill 45--Eddie Morgan scored 19 points and grabbed 16 rebounds for San Clemente (9-4) in a semifinal game. Bill Hagedorn scored 15 and Melvin Johnson scored 11 for San Clemente.

Valencia 60, Atascadero 54--John Wilson had 15 points and junior center Adolfo Gomez had 14 points and 19 rebounds to lead Valencia (8-2) in a semifinal game. Valencia plays San Clemente for the championship at 7:30 tonight.
