School: Santiago High Sport: Field Hockey Position: Right inner Class: Senior

Monroy, the leading scorer for the top-ranked field hockey team in the Southern Section, set the single-game section record by scoring nine goals in a 24-0 victory over University Tuesday. Michelle Vowell (Santiago, 1984) had held the previous record of seven, a total that Santiago’s Teresa Puskas also matched in Tuesday’s victory. “(Monroy) is a terrific ballhandler,” Santiago Coach Kit Snider said. “And she’s aggressive--she doesn’t stop until the whistle blows.” Monroy, who finished the regular season with 41 goals, is part of the most prolific team in section history. Santiago (22-0, 9-0 in the Garden Grove League) has scored 132 goals, breaking its own record of 106 set in 1984, and has allowed only four goals. The Cavaliers, who have won eight consecutive league titles, will begin their quest for a third consecutive Tournament of Champions title today when they play host to La Quinta at 3:30 p.m.

Other top performers:

Gillian Bean, who scored 20 and 14 points in Marina’s two Sunset League victories, which clinched a share of the league title for the Vikings.

Heather Brannan, who scored 35 points in a 78-57 La Quinta loss to undefeated Rancho Alamitos and 36 points in a 55-52 victory over Bolsa Grande.
