A 15-year-old girl was shot and killed at Jim Gilliam Park in the Crenshaw district of South Los Angeles early Tuesday, authorities said.

Elena Castrellon, 15, was at a party with friends when she was shot by an unknown gunman at the park at 4055 Stevely Ave. about 12:30 a.m., Officer Donald Bender said. The teen-ager, a resident of the neighborhood, died at the scene.

A motive for the shooting was not immediately established. But a detective said there was a strong possibility that it was related to two rival gangs in the area.

The girl was standing about 50 feet from the nearest roadway, and authorities believe the killer was on foot.

The gunman fled and no arrests were made.
