BOYS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Carlson’s 3-Pointer Gives Katella a Victory

Kevin Carlson sank a three-point basket at the buzzer to give Katella High School a 67-66 victory over El Dorado in an Empire League basketball game Wednesday night.

The Knights (14-7, 5-4 in league) trailed, 47-39, after three quarters but outscored the Hawks, 28-19, in the fourth quarter.

Carlson scored 24 points for Katella. Roger Arias added 17.

Shawn Holcomb scored 23 points and Brett Tomko 14 for El Dorado (6-16, 0-9).

In other Empire League games.

Esperanza 75, Cypress 37--Matt Kordik scored 27 points and Joe Foss added 11 for host Esperanza (17-8, 6-3). The Aztecs outscored Cypress, 41-13, in the second half.

Los Alamitos 83, Loara 74--Jason Cunningham scored 24 points and Brian Hakala 23 to lead the host Griffins (18-6, 9-0). Loara (11-13, 4-5) took a 46-43 lead early in the third quarter, but, behind Cunningham and Hakala, the Griffins rallied. Both scored 14 points in the second half. Tes Whitlock scored 26 points for Loara.

In the Garden Grove League:

Kennedy 89, Los Amigos 56--Brian Cline scored 23 points, making a school-record 11 of 11 from the field, for Kennedy. Cline, a senior forward, also had seven rebounds. The Fighting Irish (16-5, 12-1) outscored Los Amigos, 23-7, in the third quarter to break open the game. Brandon Douglas scored 21 for Los Amigos.

Pacifica 76, Bolsa Grande 63--Kevin Gaughen had 26 points, including six three-pointers, and 14 rebounds for visiting Pacifica (15-6, 11-2). Robert Fierro had 19 points for host Bolsa Grande (7-14, 5-8).

Garden Grove 80, Rancho Alamitos 66--Joe Aguirre scored 18 points and had 15 assists for host Garden Grove (13-10, 9-4). Tim Vassar scored 15 points, Mark Perry 14 and Brandon Hoalton 12 for Garden Grove. Chris Singleton scored 20 for Rancho Alamitos.

Santiago 66, La Quinta 63 (OT)--Trung Vu made two free throws with 15 seconds left to clinch the victory for host Santiago (6-14, 5-8). Con Nguyen, who scored 16 points, made a layup with 45 seconds left to give the Cavaliers a 64-63 lead. Mike Carrasco and Joe Huelskamp each scored 15 points for Santiago.

In the Orange League:

Savanna 66, Anaheim 53--Andy Trumpour scored 19 points and Jeremy Lyche 17 to lead host Savanna (15-9, 6-3). Toby Priest scored 14 for the Rebels, who trail Western by one game with one game remaining.

Western 58, Magnolia 34--Nurishi Stevenson scored 17 points and grabbed 12 rebounds as Western clinched a share of the league title. Western (19-3, 7-2) outscored Magnolia, 32-6, in the third and fourth quarters.

Valencia 66, Brea-Olinda 43--Justin Jimenez and Adolfo Gomez each scored 14 and Buiran added 12 for visiting Valencia (15-6, 5-4). Doug Yeo had 12 points for Brea (10-14, 5-4).

In the Pacific Coast League:

Laguna Beach 74, Century 59--Josh Borella scored 28 points for visiting Laguna Beach. Darvin Thompson scored 17 for Century (10-12, 2-7).

Laguna Hills 92, Costa Mesa 74--Paul LaMott, the leading scorer in the league, had 34 points for Laguna Hills. Jeff Pickens led Costa Mesa with 29 points.
